AUTISM SUNDAY COMMEMORATION

Autism Sunday commemoration was started in the year 2002 in London, United Kingdom by the parents and caregivers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the first ever service of “International day of prayer for autism spectrum disorders” was held at St.Pauls Cathedral in London the same year (1). NCRM as a part of NILS partnership had started an Indo-Japan collaborative research, both basic and translational on neuronal cell lines and their association to gut-brain axis with novel Beta glucans. The outcome of the studies yielding encouraging results, the activities further gained momentum during the Covid-19 pandemic, following the initiative of JAICARE, Madurai with Dr Raghavan, Pediatric neurologist, and a clinical study in children with ASD was conducted.

The Clinical study yielded three major path breaking outcome:
*   Improvement in pattern and quality of sleep and increased endogenous melatonin (2)
*   Behavioural improvement as per CARS score and increase in plasma alpha-synuclein (3)
*   Control of enterobacteria that secretes curli protein and amyloid leading to misfolding of alpha synuclein, the root cause of several neurological illnesses (4)

The scientific validation through subjective and objective clinical evidence made the team commemorate the 2022 Autism Sunday with participation from caregivers and parents of children with ASD and conduct a scientific panel discussion by internationally eminent researchers, clinicians, rehabilitation specialists, policy makers, psychiatrists and social workers from USA, United Kingdom, Mauritius, Srilanka, India and Japan.
